M-STEP Testing

Grades 3-5 have been preparing to take the state test (M-STEP).  This is a required test and it will take place in the weeks immediately following spring break.
Please make sure you look ahead on your family calendar (Gr 3,4,5) to make sure that your child is at school on the days listed.   Please change any appointments so they do not occur the mornings of testing.
Also, provide extra nutritional snacks on the testing days, along with a water bottle — and adequate sleep during the testing period.
Testing takes place between 9-12 on these dates:
  • Grade 5  April 10, 11, 12, 17
  • Grade 4  May 8, 9, 10
  • Grade 3  April  24, 25, 26

Updates from Room 201

Lots of changes are happening!!  The weather is constantly changing and so is our schedule!!!  Let’s hold on tight. . .spring break is a few short weeks away!

The 3rd grade team met last week and we made some adjustments to our curriculum and using Study Island.  Students will be using Study Island more in school, so the extra time at home is not necessary.  Beginning next week, we are going back to two math homework papers each week.  Spelling and grammar will continue to alternate with next week being a grammar week.  This means no added homework.  All grammar practice is done in class.

Study Island

During our Study Island time, the students will be split up into groups.  Some of the groups will work with me while some are working on targeted, specific standards on the computer.  Then the next day, the groups will flip flop.  This allows small group work time to help with understanding as well as learning on the computer.

Math

We will have a math test on Tuesday.  This involves two step word problems and it is a little difficult.  A review paper is coming home today.  I will also send home a homework paper on Monday for practice.

Reading Logs

Please send in the February reading logs by Wednesday!

As always let me know if you have any questions!  This is a GREAT class and I look forward to being with them every day.

Updates from Room 201

March begins this week!!  Which means the end of winter is nearing and hopefully cold and flu season is ending.  We had many, many students out last week. Spring Break is on it’s way!

Below are some updates and calendar events:

Homework

Everyone is doing well on the Study Island homework assignments.  Some of the students are doing the assignments 2-3 times just to improve and have a better understanding.  I am so proud of that effort.  This week’s homework is titled, Week of Feb 26 – Homework, Elapsed Time and Model Multiplication.

Math

Unit 4 is all about word problems with misleading, hidden, and extra information, along with two step word problems.  TRICKY!!!  We will continue to build strategies for solving.  We are also taking mixed facts multiplication tests.  There are 80 problems and the students are given four minutes to complete them.  Continuing to practice multiplication at home is important!

Spelling

We will have a pretest on Monday.  Look for Unit 20 spelling words to come home this week.

Writing

We are beginning a writing unit called, Literary Essays.  Students will be given a short article to read, highlight, and take notes.  From this article they will write their opinion from a character trait or big idea.

Reading

We are in our 2nd book in the Books in a Series unit.  I am very impressed with the conversations happening during these book club times.  The students are enjoying talking about their books.

Calendar Items:

Jet’s Pizza Night on March 8.  Save yourself time and order pizza.  Be sure to tell them it is for Ms. VanderStel’s class so we get the points to earn a free pizza!

Early Release on March 9

Parent Teacher Conferences begin the week of March 12.  Look for a paper with your conference time to come home later this week.

Spring Break begins March 30!

Updates from Room 201

Homework

This week’s homework is titled, Week of Feb. 19 Homework.  It contains Real World Problems and Division Properties.  Please have your child complete it on Study Island before next Monday.  Also, there are a handful of students that either 1/2 completed or didn’t start the homework from last week.  Please complete that first.

Spelling/Grammar

Spelling and grammar will look a little different for a while, probably throughout the rest of the year.  These two subjects are going to alternate weeks.  This week we are focusing on grammar and so there are NO SPELLING WORDS for this week!! 🙂 We have been writing and typing constructed responses in class and this is taking away from the spelling and grammar time, so I needed to shift some things around.

Social Studies

The History tests were FANTASTIC!  I am so proud of how well the students did on the test.  Those will be sent home tomorrow.  Next we will study Michigan Government.

Reading

We started our 2nd book club book.  The students are handling their book clubs and being willing to discuss their readings.  I am very impressed with how well the groups are communicating.

Field Trip

The snow stayed long enough for us to be able to snowshoe!!!  Today we learned how the Ojibway snowshoed to travel the land during the winter.  We also were able to handle some artifacts and see what they were used for.  For example, did you know antlers attached to a stick could be used for a rake?  Our guide also showed us how the Native Americans made a fire using friction.  It was a great day.  I couldn’t do this without the help of the volunteers that came out to be with us!

This week. . . .

We have an exciting week coming up!  Please send in Valentine’s before Wednesday so we can get them distributed to our friends.  If you are signed up to help, please come to school at 2:30 for instructions.

We have our outdoor field trip on Thursday. Please dress your child in warm winter gear.  We will be outside snowshoeing for part of the field trip.  We will be back to school by lunch time so students can still order hot lunch.  I will contact parents who are coming to the field trip first thing tomorrow.

On Friday, we will have our PJ, Stuffed Animal, and Blanket day.  This sounds like the perfect way to end a busy week!
